The Diorama at the SE corner of Regent's Park was built in 1823. Coined by Louis Daguerre, Diorama is a word made from the Greek dia meaning through and orama the word for scene. Dioramas were specialised theatres for the display of large painted scenes. Displayed on curved walls and using some ingenious mechanical props, lighting effects and mirrors the scenes were interchanged, transformed and dramatised into the special effects entertainments of their day. Designed by Augustus Charles Pugin and built by Jacob Smith there was seating for 200 people. Dioramas were masterminded by Louis Daguerre and Charles-Marie Boulton. Daguerre was a talented trompe-l'oeil (French for 'deceives the eye') painter and inventor most notably of the Daguerrotype, an early form of photography. Boulton was a troubadour painter. Troubadour painters created imaginatively dramatised historical scenes.

The gas works at Kings Cross were among the earliest. Gas was made by chemically processing coal and was used for lighting and cooking. There were once many of these gas holders on site. The containers were telescopic and expanded vertically when full, hence the framework.
